Top Tips For Deploying An ERP System

 In home-blog

Selecting and deploying an ERP system can be a daunting process. Many jump in blind, without having a solid long-term solution in place of how to make the most of both their time and money. To help you increase your chances of successfully choosing and implementing ERP, here are some words of wisdom, as cited on CIO.com.

Get upper management involved

Resources at a lower level tend not to be as helpful as support from upper management. Although it’s not necessary for those at senior level to know and understand every last detail, they need to be aware of the reasons projects are being delayed, for example.

List your requirements first

Prior to looking for vendors, define your project outcomes and make a succinct list of requirements. The more specific you can be initially, the more detailed your vendors will be when they come back to you with a proposal – meaning you’ll get the perfect fit.

Make sure it is mobile friendly

BYOD and mobile adoption is increasing across almost every industry – so forget ERP systems with the ‘desktop only’ mentality. Choose a solution that will allow you to be productive via your mobile device, but one that will also keep sensitive data secure.

Ask for references

Asking an ERP solution provider for references should be a priority; if a vendor can’t give you at least three examples of happy customers, they may not have the experience you require. If you are a member of an industry association, you could also ask others for their ERP recommendations.

Keep it simple

Highly customized ERP systems will generate higher costs, so consider whether you really have a case for a customization. Customization isn’t just for the initial setup; you will also need on-going support of the custom code.

Don’t forget change management

Organizational change management is crucial when it comes to the success of your project. You may need to alter day-to-day job descriptions which can – if not properly controlled – impact the culture of your company.

Appoint a project manager

Select someone internally to project manage the system; don’t just rely on the vendor’s project manager. This person should be capable of learning the new system like the back of their hand.

Dedicate time for training

After you have identified the needs of various departments, dedicate sufficient time and resources for training on the ERP system. This will require commitment from everyone, but it’s important that the project team actively seeks to reduce the burden on workers.
